The internet has been abuzz since a new study revealed that New York women on online dating sites respond to only 1.2 percent of men shorter than five feet, nine inches tall. I’m 5’9″, which isn’t outrageously tall, but I have been 5’9″ since the sixth grade, when it outrageously tall.
My aversion to goat cheese doesn’t make me a bad person — neither does my attraction to tall men.
no secret that any man who stipulated he was seeking a size 2, minimum 34D on his profile would end up with a steady diet of swipes left, or possibly even hate mail.
Here's a common one: "I like to wear heels, so if you're under (insert desired height) swipe left." And it's not even just requests for guys who are slightly taller -- in some cases it's pushed to the statistical edges of male height.
Demanding that any suitors be taller than 6'3" is a rather limiting request considering the average male height in the US tops out around 5'10".
Fun fact #1: I once dated a girl who was taller than me. Fun fact #2: I got rejected by girls who were taller than me because they couldn’t accept the fact that I was shorter than her. He and I went out about three times and all the while, I kept thinking ‘I can see over his head. That’s easy when you are not intimate with any of them.
Prioritizing height on my checklist seemed like an easy way to avoid my issue with my weight. I came to realize that this idea of the right man fixing my insecurities permeated my dating criteria.
I distinctly remember brainstorming who I was going to invite to my first dance as a freshman. He was cute, friendly, funny, and pretty much the ideal first-dance date candidate except for one thing: He was a couple inches shorter than me. If I still felt petite wearing four-inch heels with my frame of 5 feet 6 inches, he was worth my attention.
Slowly, this extreme standard of height waned, but I still felt awkward if he was near as tall as I was.
